Framing Ideas for Photos

CORALVILLE, Iowa – After the photo shoot is completed and the order is processed, finalized and delivered, my job – ideally – is done. However, I’m always interested in what people do with the photos I take of their families.

Ryan and Nicole of Coralville had a great appreciation for my custom photography and, just as importantly, wanted to display the images I took prominently in their home. This past August, they had me photograph their baby daughter Ainsley. After they had seen the photos and before finalizing their order, the couple’s living room had empty frames set against one wall. If that seems weird, it’s actually not. Nicole put a great deal of thought and visualization into figuring out what she wanted, where she wanted to put it and how she wanted it displayed.

The end result was something quite unique.

For starters, the family did not want to hang the photos on the wall. So Nicole’s dad installed ledges from Room and Board to support the photos. That way, Nicole said recently, they can switch out the photos in place of new ones easily.

The frames they got – contemporary yet simple – were from Room and Board as well as CB2, a sister company of Crate&Barrel.

They mixed the frames photos – all 5x7s and 8x10s – with pieces of artwork to create a space that was personal and inviting. The entire display, I thought, was just fantastic… and perfect for their home.

If nothing else, it inspired me to finally start on some personal photo projects I’ve been putting off. So thank you, Nicole (and Ainsley!).
